Brother -
As we approach the pinnacle of the holiday season - let me share a trick with you that I've learned over the years.
Gift people things that you love.
This can be small, and many times it is, but there is always a story behind it. It will create a far more meaningful connection with the recipient and give you confidence that you picked out something great.
This was originally taught to me by Mom. Her friend Sue first surprised her with a small gift. I forget what it was exactly, but along the lines of hand lotion. Her story was that she'd tried so many hand lotions in the past, but this one rose above the crowd. It sparked joy every time she put it on, and she wanted to deliver this same happiness to Mom. Sue was able to take a small $10 gift and make it one of the most memorable Mom has ever received.
As you read this, you may start drawing a connection to the gifts you've received from me over the years. My favorite notebook, t-shirts, books... do you see the pattern? Even this year - I gave you an alarm clock! A weird gift, but one that had a story. Now there is a connection every morning as it beams artificial sunlight on your face, and you hear birds chirping for you to begin the day.
The other benefit of this gift-giving tactic is that it will free up mental energy for you. Your most precious resource that you likely undervalue. Remember the little dramas of trying to decide what to get Mom and Dad for Christmas? Now you'll have a starting point for your future brainstorms. Simply think of the things you use daily that bring you joy.
I'll leave you with my final point - give gifts to people who don't expect it. My favorite is gifting books that I've loved to people whom I respect. These books usually have meaty discussion points as well that are great for future conversations.
Let me leave you with a quote and a question.
"Praise others. It will bring them peace of mind. Do not expect others to praise you. It will bring you peace of mind."
-James Clear
What's a small thing (less than $25) that you love? Who is someone you could surprise with this gift?
